Proposed Cleanup Plan (January 2025)

Public Meeting, Availability Session, and Comment Period on Proposed Cleanup Plan

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) has issued a Proposed Plan for the cleanup of five areas of Indian Refinery Site to protect human health and the environment. Please refer to the January 2025 Fact Sheet for more information.

The Illinois EPA will hold a 30-day comment period from January 15 through February 13, 2025 to provide an opportunity for the public to participate in the final selection of the cleanup options. The Illinois EPA will select the final remedies after the public comment period ends and may select another option after public comments are considered. Please refer to the Public Notice for instructions on how to provide comments on the Proposed Plan.

You may comment at a public meeting on January 29, 2025 at 6:00 pm at the Lawrenceville High School, 2200 James St., Lawrenceville or email epa.publichearingcom@illinois.gov by February 13, 2025. A formal presentation will be provided at the meeting. The Illinois EPA will also hold a public availability session at the Lawrenceville High School before the public meeting on January 29, 2025, from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm to answer questions about the site; no formal presentation will be provided.

The Indian Refining Company is a National Priorities List site under Superfund. The site is almost 1,000 acres of three former refineries located next to the Embarrass River. The site includes acres of various types of contamination including floating hydrocarbon product, tank sludge, and acidic tarry waste generated from motor oil production.
