Paint

On July 28, 2023, Governor Pritzker signed into law  P.A. 103-372 (SB 836) creating the Paint Stewardship Act; effective January 1, 2024. This law requires manufacturers of architectural paint sold at retail in Illinois to submit to the Illinois EPA a plan for a postconsumer paint stewardship program. Manufacturers are allowed to use a representative organization to meet their obligations under the Act.

Illinois residents can now drop-off their left over paint at over 300 year-round drop-off sites as a result of the Illinois Paint Stewardship Act , offered by PaintCare. Please visit the PaintCare website for all information related to the Illinois program. For questions not covered on this page or the PaintCare website please email the Materials Management section at epa.recycling@illinois.gov.
