Southeast Rockford Groundwater Contamination

Rockford, Illinois
Winnebago County

The subject site was placed on the National Priorities List (NPL) in 1989 because of private wells and at least one municipal well contaminated with chlorinated industrial solvents. The NPL includes sites of national priority among the known releases or threatened releases of hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants throughout the United States and its territories.

The NPL is intended primarily to guide the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) in determining which sites warrant further investigation. Lead for the site has been split between the the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) and U.S. EPA.

Work completed includes the connection of over 800 homes and businesses to the Rockford Public Water Supply, ongoing treatment of Public Well No. 35, and ongoing groundwater monitoring. The feasibility study and proposed plan for control of the four main sources of contamination are scheduled to be presented to the public for comment in late 2000 or early 2001.
