Exemption from Chlorination Requirements

The Illinois Environmental Protection Act was amended in 1983 to permit specific public water supplies to apply for exemption from the requirement for continuous chlorination. Units of local government are required to obtain the approval of the voters of that local government. Small systems meeting strict criteria are eligible to apply for exemption from chlorination, based upon size, treatment, number of consumers served, and operational practices. Systems which provide only chlorination and/or fluoridation treatment; use groundwater from protected sources; and practice an active cross-connection control program; will be eligible for exemption after completing the application process and receiving notification from the Agency. Review of chlorination exemption applications is completed and all exemptions issued by the Public Water Supply Program Field Operations staff.
