Public Water Supply Energy Efficiency Grant Program

The Illinois EPA Office of Energy will award funding for energy efficiency upgrades at public water supply (PWS) facilities, also referred to as drinking water treatment plants (DWTP). Funding for this program is provided by the U.S. Department of Energy (USDOE) State Energy Program (SEP) supplemental funding available through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). 

The Public Water Supply Energy Efficiency or PWS EE Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) will offer awards ranging from $20,000 to $500,000. The projects must reduce the amount of energy consumed by water treatment operations and must be identified in an energy efficiency assessment completed within the past 5 years. Match is required. 

PWS EE applications will undergo a comprehensive, mert-based review; the detailed socring factors are outlined in the NOFO provided below.  Important to note, additional points given to applications serving projects in an Illinois EPA Office of Environmental Justice Area of Concern AND/OR for projects located in municipally owned electric utilities or electric cooperatives.
