Fluorinated Gas Reduction Program

The Fluorinated Gas Reduction Program is funded by US EPA's Climate Pollution Reduction Grants and supports the adoption of ultra low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants in the industrial and commercial food refrigeration sectors in an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. 

Program Overview

Awards will fund the incremental costs associated with replacing high GWP refrigerant systems with ultra low (<10) GWP alternatives PLUS an additional incentive. Extracted refrigerants must be destroyed. New construction of ultra low GWP systems is also eligible.

The Fluorinated Gas Reduction Program is a competitive grant program prioritizing projects demonstrating significant greenhouse gas reductions, replicability, and benefits to areas of environmental justice concern.

 

Examples of Existing Systems to be Replaced:

  • Centralized DX Systems
  • Rack Systems
  • Secondary/Cascade Systems
  • Single/One-to-one Systems

Examples of Proposed System Replacements:

  • Secondary/Cascade Systems
  • Microdistributed System 
  • Single/One-to-one Systems
  • Transcritical CO2

Ultra Low GWP Refrigerants:

  • CO2
  • Ammonia
  • Propane

Program Significance

Fluorinated gases are significant climate pollutants that can be hundreds to thousands of times more potent than CO2. Almost 40% of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) emissions are produced in the refrigeration sector. By transitioning to ultra low GWP refrigeration systems, ozone depleting substances (ODS) and greenhouse gas emissions are significantly reduced or eliminated. Additionally, significant safety and technological improvements have allowed these natural refrigerant systems to often operate more efficiently than their predecessors.
