The Biomethane Program, funded by the U.S. EPA’s Climate Pollution Reduction Grants, supports the development of community-based systems that put biomethane to use, effectively reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Program Overview
Awards will support projects that capture, produce, and/or beneficially use biomethane, including anaerobic digestion, landfill gas capture, manure and organic waste management, methane-emissions reduction, and related equipment and technologies.
The Biomethane Program is a competitive grant program that prioritizes projects with significant greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions, reliable feedstock sources, strong feasibility and readiness, hard-to-decarbonize end uses, and meaningful economic and community benefits.
Examples of Projects
Landfills: Turn waste gas into clean energy.
Wastewater Facilities: Capture methane from sewage treatment and convert into fuel.
Organic Waste: Turn organic byproducts (food and yard waste) into clean fuel.
Agricultural Waste: Convert crop residue into renewable gas.
Livestock Farms: Convert manure into renewable energy.
Program Significance
Methane (CH₄) is a powerful climate pollutant, with more than 80 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide (CO₂) over a 20-year period. Capturing methane through biomethane projects prevents this potent greenhouse gas from entering the atmosphere while transforming waste into a valuable source of renewable energy.
Organic materials such as manure, food waste, wastewater, and landfill waste naturally generate methane as they decompose. The Biomethane Program supports systems that capture, clean, and beneficially use this methane as a renewable fuel.
The program will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, accelerate biomethane market development, and demonstrate innovative technologies. The projects will create new economic opportunities for communities and producers.
