Illinois EPA Takes Action to Ensure PFTC Fulfills Cleanup Commitments

In February 2025, a failure at a petroleum storage facility in Berwyn caused roughly 6,000 barrels of liquid asphalt to spill, with 4,000 barrels reaching the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal. Federal and state agencies coordinated cleanup efforts, removing over 1,500 tons of asphalt and installing containment measures. After the U.S. EPA withdrew in late 2025, the Illinois EPA issued a Violation Notice to ensure remaining work was completed and referred the matter to the Illinois Attorney General’s Office for enforcement.
