Pollution Complaint
If you are reporting an environmental emergency, please also contact the Illinois Emergency Management Agency at 1-800-782-7860.
The Illinois EPA takes pollution complaints seriously and is committed to responding to complaints as quickly as possible. By using the Illinois EPA’s online complaint form, your complaint can be received and the investigation process can begin sooner than if it were sent through the mail.
You may report a pollution complaint by:
- Completing and submitting the Pollution Complaint form electronically.
- Download the accessible PDF version (en Español) of the Illinois EPA Complaint Form. After you complete the form, you may mail it to the Illinois EPA or fax it to 217‑785‑8346.
- Completing a hard copy Pollution Complaint Form, which is available at any Illinois EPA field office and mailing it to the Illinois EPA.
- At times, particularly for persistent incidents, the Illinois EPA may ask a complainant to keep a log of incidents. A record or log may assist the Illinois EPA with enforcement.
The Illinois EPA receives pollution complaints on many subjects, including: open dumping of garbage/construction debris, odor complaints from industrial/agricultural facilities, and illegal discharges into streams/rivers or other threats to public health and the environment.
The Illinois EPA does not have an active noise control program under state regulations. If you have a complaint about excessive noise, the following contacts found on our Noise Pollution page may help.
