Counties Opt-In

For counties that are unfamiliar with the program, this electronics recycling program is a manufacturer supported program in which electronics manufacturers help with end-of-life management for obsolete electronics. This requirement was established under the Consumer Electronics Recycling Act (CERA), which was enacted on January 1, 2019. Manufacturers are required to provide funding for packaging materials, transportation, and the subsequent recycling of certain electronic devices. This program could assist your county with protecting human and environmental health, as well as reducing the economic burden of illegal dumping by increasing electronics recycling opportunities in your jurisdiction.

In order to be part of the program, a county must opt-in by March 1st.  It should be noted that choosing to opt-in does not enter the county into a binding agreement. If for any reason a county is unable to continue participation, they are free to opt-out at any point without penalty.

When submitting the Opt-In form, a copy needs to be sent to the designated manufacturer representative so your county may be properly enrolled in the Program Plan.

Any questions about the form can be directed to EPA.Recycling@illinois.gov.
