American Iron and Steel Requirements: Guidance Documents

The federal "American Iron and Steel (AIS)" provision requires the use of iron and steel products that are produced in the United States for all projects funded by an SRF loan. This requirement is applicable to projects for the construction, alteration, maintenance, or repair of a public water system or treatment works. For loan agreements signed during fiscal year 2015, exemptions from the AIS requirements are in effect for certain projects based on the construction permit issuance date. For wastewater related projects, a construction permit must have been issued prior to June 10, 2014. For drinking water projects, a construction permit must have been issued prior to December 16, 2014 in order to be exempt from the AIS requirements. For projects not requiring a permit, the plans and specification approval date will be used for determining exemption status.
