Waukegan Speedway
Park City, Illinois
Lake County
BOL ID# 0971405029
In 2019, while performing sampling at the neighboring Limbrunner landfill site the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) discovered elevated concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in a residential lawn in Farmington Estates. The neighborhood was previously the location of the Waukegan Motor Speedway.
Subsequently, Illinois EPA collected soil samples from yards in Farmington Estates in 2021 and 2023. Soil samples were collected from a variety of depths, between the surface and one foot below the ground surface. Soil samples collected from approximately 30 out of the 36 lawns sampled contained elevated concentrations of PCBs (See the area outlined by yellow on the map, referred to now as the Waukegan Speedway Site).
Illinois EPA is working with the United States Environmental Protection Agency to determine if the Site would qualify for the National Priorities List (NPL). If listed on the NPL, federal funding could be used to conduct a more complete study of the site and, if necessary, conduct a clean-up.
